Smoking pipes of the 18th and 19th centuries were often made out of clay (such as kaolin or stoneware). They were made up of two parts, a stem and a bowl. Often, stems were also made of clay (like the first two pieces); but other pipes, known as "reed pipes", used a hollow reed as the stem. The reed was stuck into a very short stem at the bottom of the pipe bowl. Both the bottom pipe bowl fragment seen here as well as the figural smoking pipe bowl fragment seen earlier are examples of "reed pipes." |
